Brave Mirror is a theatre and production company rooted in Bristol and London. The focus of the company is on collaboration: that art cannot, and should not, be made in a vacuum. Our projects are old stories, told in new ways, and with new voices. The company is led by Jamie Saul (Artistic Director), and Thomas Duggan (Executive Producer).
Our first show was Shakespeare’s classic revenge tragedy, ‘The Tempest’, performed at the Island in Bristol in 2019. Before the pandemic, we were working on a new adaptation of Charlotte Bronte’s trailblazing coming-of-age story, ‘Jane Eyre’. This was cancelled due to Covid, but then revived in September 2021 and performed at the original venue, Cotham Church, in Bristol. During the pandemic we produced ‘Voice Note’, an audio anthology of original monologues, bringing together over 25 artists from across the UK, and a digital adaptation of ‘Antigone’, Sophocles’ timeless, timely story of love and protest – recorded as live, and then edited for release. You can read more about our previous shows here.
Brave Mirror’s 2021-22 season focused on new writing. Minnie Cunningham’s ‘Cancer of the Blood’ was the first show, and ‘The Sixth Heart’, written by Natalie Beddows, was the second. It was supported with a grant from Arts Council England and played in Bristol in June 2022.
In 2023, we staged ‘Attention Span’, an absurd new sketch comedy show from emerging playwright Joseph Hollas. It played at the White Bear, Kennington from 3rd-5th December 2023.
Our 2024 season continued our collaboration with Joseph Hollas – first with the brand new comedy show ‘Attention All Passengers’ in May 2024, followed by a remount of ‘Attention Span’ in August 2024 at Camden Fringe.
In Spring 2025, firstly we’ll be producing Penny Drop Productions’ ‘Lady’s Fingers’ in February across four nights in both Bristol and London. In April, we’ll be staging our major new show ‘The Tempest: This Island’ at the Cockpit Theatre.
