A divided city. A new King. A woman who will stop at nothing to honour her brother.
‘Antigone’, a story of love and protest, is one of the great political tragedies. It questions the authority leaders hold over their people, the power of the gods and of family, and examines the fatal flaws that exist within us all. It asks, ultimately, how far we would go for the people we love.
The civil war in Thebes has drawn to a close. The two sons of Oedipus, leaders of the opposing armies, lie slain, and their uncle Creon has taken the throne. He issues a decree regarding the two dead men: that one will be given full burial rites, while the other must remain unburied, a traitor. But their sister Antigone defies the new King, burying her brother, and risking her own life in the process.
This new adaptation of Sophocles’ timeless, timely play is set in the aftermath of these decisions, in a video call between King Creon and his Advisers. It has been rehearsed and recorded entirely virtually, and edited for release. Occupying a space between film and theatre, it aims to reflect the divided, virtual world in which we currently live.
CONTENT WARNING: Please be aware that the play contains references to death and suicide, and descriptions of violence. This show also contains flashing images.
